How to treat Wastewater

Turning waste into something clean and renewable is an amazing process. Every drop of water that we rinse down the drain or flush enters the sewer system. Most of the wastewater system is gravity-fed, which means all the waste flows down toward its ultimate destination, the wastewater treatment facility. As gravity helps waste flow through the system and closer to the treatment facility, it typically encounters a lift station. These engineering marvels can take millions of liters of waste and — literally — boost it so it can continue flowing down to the treatment facility. Typically, several different sewer lines connect to lift stations.

Screening and Grit Removal

Once inside the wastewater treatment facility, the waste is screened and SPIRAC removes any solid or foreign material that doesn't belong in the sewer system. We continue screening until all the solids are removed, dried out, and sent to a local landfill. 

Grit is an issue for wastewater utilities, causing damage, inefficiency and maintenance costs throughout the network and treatment process.

The problems multiply when grit reaches the treatment works, where it builds up in tanks, clogs basins and aeration lanes and compromises biological processes. For this reason we remove the grit as soon as possible after it reaches the treatment works. The most commonly-used

equipment for this purpose, is our Grit Vortex and SANDSEP® classifier unit. 

Membranes

In the treatment facility, the liquid gets further purified in a membrane filtering system. Its microscopically sized filters make the water clean enough to reuse at local parks and golf courses. 

More Testing and Filtering

Further tests and filtering are done to make sure the waste is gone, and the resulting treated water is ready to be reused.

Recycling

After all that work, a product called treated effluent that can recycled in a variety of ways. 

Solids removing and handling is really what we are aiming to do.  There is a high cost, whether it is the cost of cleaning or the cost of damage done down the stream. We can remove Grit and Sludge to a very fine level, which will benefit everybody, including our customers.
